Distribution:-

    Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, French Guiana, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Surinam, and Venezuela

Habitat:-

  1. Found in swamps and marshes, in open ditches and pools, beside rivers, and near to cultivated rice fields, usually with deep water
  2. Grows in open habitats

Morphological character:-

  1. Perennial, tufted, and scrambling grass with brittle culm near the base of plants
  2. Open panicles
  3. Spikelets about 6.6 to 11mm long and 1.9 to 2.5mm wide, with awns 6 to 16cm long;
  4. Anthers usually 2 to 5mm long

Specific traits:-

  1. Elongation ability
  2. Source of Cytoplasmic male sterility
